The Surge 2 is a hard-edged sci-fi action RPG with the deliberate tension of a Soulslike, but its ruined streets, detention blocks, industrial yards, and underground facilities give it a more grounded, dystopian identity than fantasy rivals. Every encounter feels dangerous, while the city’s collapsing infrastructure and scattered survivors slowly reveal a larger conspiracy. Its tone is bleak and hostile, though the exaggerated weaponry and satisfyingly savage finishers keep the action from becoming joyless.

Combat revolves around stamina management, careful positioning, blocking, dodging, and targeting specific enemy body parts. Rather than merely killing foes for random drops, you can cut off an armored arm, leg, torso, or head to claim the gear piece you want, creating a risk-reward choice in every fight: attack an exposed limb for a quicker kill or go after protected equipment for a better upgrade. Weapons range from heavy hammers and twin-rigged blades to spears, staffs, and punching weapons, each with its own timing and feel, while implants, drones, armor sets, and character stats let you build around defense, energy gain, health, or aggressive damage. Jericho City is more interconnected and varied than the first game’s industrial complex, with alternate routes, hidden shortcuts, NPC questlines, optional bosses, and choices that encourage a second look at familiar districts. A directional parry mechanic adds a demanding but rewarding answer to elite enemies, although newcomers can lean on dodging and defensive builds until they learn the rhythm.
