Vaporum: Lockdown

An isolated ocean tower becomes a hostile mechanical labyrinth as scientist Ellie Teller fights to survive a research disaster and uncover what went wrong inside Arx Vaporum. Vaporum: Lockdown is a first-person, grid-based dungeon crawler with a heavy steampunk atmosphere, built around claustrophobic corridors, humming machinery, and the sense that every sealed door hides another threat. Its pacing recalls classic PC labyrinth crawlers, but the presentation is more modern, with voiced story scenes and environmental detail giving the facility a convincing industrial identity. The tone is tense and cerebral rather than action-heavy power fantasy: escape requires caution, curiosity, and a willingness to experiment.

Movement takes place one square at a time, while combat unfolds in real time against enemies with distinct attack ranges, patterns, and weaknesses. Ellie equips different weapon types, armor pieces, boosters, and gadgets, allowing players to build around direct damage, defensive control, battlefield manipulation, or summoned mechanical helpers. Encounters reward positioning and cooldown management as much as reflexes, especially when enemies pressure the party-less protagonist in cramped rooms. Between fights, players search levels for keys, secrets, notes, and phonodiaries while tackling switches, traps, pressure plates, logic challenges, and hazards that often demand both quick reactions and careful observation.

Lockdown stands out by making a single hero feel flexible enough to support several playstyles without losing the deliberate, puzzle-focused structure that defines the genre. Its interconnected objectives encourage players to retain clues and revisit their understanding of the tower, while the gradual drip of documents and conversations turns the escape plot into a proper mystery. Compared with Legend of Grimrock, it offers a more overtly steampunk toolkit and a stronger emphasis on gadgets, while still drawing on the unforgiving dungeon design of Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder. It suits veterans who miss old-school maze crawlers, but newcomers with patience can also enjoy it thanks to its approachable interface and steady introduction of new tools.
