Yooka-laylee (Incl. 64-Bit Tonic Update)

A bright, shamelessly old-school collectathon powers its adventure with oversized playground worlds, cartoon villains, and a talking-buddy double act. Yooka, a chameleon, and Laylee, a sarcastic bat, set out to stop the book-hoarding corporate tyrant Capital B from turning every story into another product. The tone is silly, colorful, and packed with groan-worthy wordplay, but the platforming asks for real precision once its worlds start opening up. Yooka-Laylee channels the spirit of Nintendo 64-era 3D platformers while giving its own oddball cast plenty of room to steal scenes.

Most of the journey revolves around hunting Pagies, golden collectibles that unlock new areas or expand existing worlds into larger, more complicated versions. Yooka and Laylee gradually purchase moves from the snake salesman Trowzer, gaining abilities such as gliding, rolling, sonar-based puzzle tools, elemental attacks, and transformations that change how they interact with the environment. Every level mixes platforming, environmental puzzles, boss encounters, hidden collectibles, and diversions including minecart runs, arcade challenges, and Dr. Quack’s deliberately aggravating quiz show. The 64-Bit Tonic Update improves the package with 64-bit support and a selection of gameplay-altering tonics, letting players tweak movement, combat, collectibles, and challenge conditions to suit a casual sweep or a more demanding replay.

What separates it from many modern platformers is its commitment to dense, messy worlds built around curiosity rather than a straight line to the finish. Areas are stuffed with characters to help, secret routes to uncover, and enough Pagies, quills, ghost writers, and other trinkets to keep completionists busy for a long time. Local multiplayer minigames add a lightweight party option, though the main draw remains the single-player hunt through increasingly elaborate stages. Fans of Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, and upbeat mascot platformers will feel immediately at home, while newcomers should arrive ready for occasional camera quirks and a lot of collectible hunting.
