Aloft trades the usual hunger-and-hardship grind for a gentler rhythm of crafting, gardening, animal care, and skybound discovery, while still giving the world a genuine ecological problem to solve. A fungal corruption consumes life across the clouds, turning some islands into dangerous places inhabited by hostile mushroom creatures. The tone remains hopeful rather than bleak: you are not merely surviving in the skies, but actively restoring them.

Most of your time revolves around landing on islands, collecting materials, uncovering old ruins, and turning a chosen chunk of land into a functioning airship. Building a helm, sails, and steering equipment lets you pilot your entire home through the open sky, carrying your workshop, crops, and animal companions wherever the wind takes you. Resources become tools, furnishings, recipes, machines, and antidotes, while windmills, cables, and pulleys allow for increasingly automated production setups. Combat appears when clearing infected islands, but progression focuses on curing ecosystems, increasing biodiversity, earning rarer materials, and making each location more resilient to future corruption.

Its strongest idea is the ability to transform virtually any island into a mobile base, giving sandbox building more personality than a conventional static settlement. Wind is more than scenery: favorable gusts improve travel and machinery output, while powerful currents demand better sails and more thoughtful navigation. Up to eight players can cooperate, even bringing their own island homes into a shared world to form a drifting village, and the island editor supports community-made locations for extra variety.
