Christmas Eve turns Gotham into a frozen, hostile hunting ground, with a young Batman marked for death by eight elite assassins. Batman: Arkham Origins is an open-world action adventure that winds the clock back before Arkham Asylum, showing Bruce Wayne as a feared but still untested vigilante rather than the polished legend he later becomes. Black Mask’s enormous bounty draws killers from across the criminal underworld, while Gotham’s police treat Batman as another dangerous problem. The mood is darker and rougher around the edges than the later games, balancing snowbound streets, gang-controlled districts, and the pressure of surviving one very long night.

Combat uses the series’ familiar Freeflow system: Batman chains strikes, counters, evasions, gadget attacks, and finishing moves while reading the rhythm of a crowd. Predator rooms shift the pace toward stealth, letting players stalk armed enemies from gargoyles, disable them with gadgets, and turn fear into a weapon. Detective Mode highlights clues, enemies, and hidden routes, while crime-scene reconstruction sequences ask Batman to replay events and search for the detail that breaks a case. The city opens gradually as new equipment such as the remote claw, shock gloves, and improved navigation tools expands traversal and access to side cases, collectibles, and combat challenges.

Its greatest strength is the early-career angle: Batman is capable, but his anger, inexperience, and uneasy relationships with Gordon and Alfred give the story more friction than usual. The assassin encounters also provide several memorable boss fights, especially when each opponent forces a different response instead of simply testing brawling skills. Gotham remains built around Arkham City’s district-based structure, yet the winter setting and extra neighborhoods give it a distinct visual identity. Fans of Arkham City, Shadow of Mordor-style rhythmic combat, and comic-book detective stories find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers can start here comfortably because it serves as a prequel.
