Dunwall is a rotting coastal capital where whale-oil machinery, aristocratic excess, and a lethal rat plague turn every alley into a potential trap. You play Corvo Attano, a disgraced royal protector blamed for the Empress’s assassination and forced into the role of a masked avenger. The story mixes political conspiracy with occult power, giving its revenge plot a grim, elegant tone rather than simple hack-and-slash brutality. Dishonored’s GotY Edition also includes its major story expansions, broadening the conflict with new perspectives and missions.

Each mission drops Corvo into a dense sandbox built for improvisation: sneak across rooftops, possess animals, blink through guarded rooms, or walk through the front gate with sword and pistol ready. Supernatural gifts such as short-range teleportation, time manipulation, wind blasts, and swarms of rats combine with mines, crossbow bolts, grenades, and environmental hazards in remarkably flexible ways. Targets can be killed, spared, exposed, or quietly removed without anyone knowing you were there, while optional loot and hidden runes reward careful exploration. Your choices feed into the Chaos system, which changes enemy presence, the city’s atmosphere, and elements of the ending depending on how violent and reckless your campaign becomes.

Arkane’s greatest achievement is how convincingly Dunwall feels like a place with rules, history, and multiple routes through nearly every objective. Levels encourage experimentation without demanding perfection, so a clean ghost run and a messy supernatural rampage both feel equally supported. The Daud-focused DLC episodes add stronger challenge maps and another assassin’s abilities, making the complete package far more substantial than the base campaign alone. Fans of Deus Ex, Thief, BioShock, or modern immersive sims find a landmark here, while newcomers should be ready for an older but still sharp first-person stealth experience that rewards curiosity over brute force.
