Doom 3: BFG Edition packages id Software’s horror-focused shooter with Resurrection of Evil, the new Lost Mission campaign, and the foundational Doom and Doom II. Rather than the breakneck arena carnage associated with newer entries, Doom 3 leans into darkness, jump scares, environmental storytelling, and the uneasy sound of something moving just beyond your flashlight beam. Its industrial sci-fi setting feels claustrophobic and grim, mixing malfunctioning laboratories, ruined command centers, and hellish architecture into a sustained survival-horror campaign.

Gunfights revolve around pushing through hostile facilities with shotguns, plasma weapons, machine guns, explosives, and the iconic BFG, while managing armor, health, ammunition, locked doors, and enemy ambushes. The BFG Edition’s most practical change is the armor-mounted flashlight, letting players illuminate rooms without surrendering their weapon, which makes its frequent dark encounters less cumbersome than in the original release. Checkpoint saves and revised controls make long missions more approachable, while the campaign still rewards careful ammunition use and alert listening over reckless rushing. Resurrection of Evil adds its own weapons and the manipulative Grabber tool, while The Lost Mission offers eight extra levels for players who want another compact descent into the disaster. Classic Doom and Doom II provide a sharply different pace: faster movement, maze-like maps, key hunting, and enormous monster-clearing sessions.

What stands out is the contrast within one package: it preserves two landmark arcade shooters while presenting Doom 3 as a deliberate, cinematic horror FPS. Improved lighting, updated presentation, optional stereoscopic 3D support on compatible hardware, and achievements give the 2004 campaign a more convenient modern shell, even if its scripted scares and slower pacing show their age. Multiplayer is present for players seeking old-school deathmatch, but the main attraction remains the single-player material. Fans of F.E.A.R., Dead Space’s oppressive atmosphere, or classic id Software gunplay find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers get an accessible route through several major eras of Doom.
