A golden retriever’s accidental interstellar rescue career gives Golden Record Retriever a wonderfully odd premise: River is dragged into space after their owner’s records begin crashing into worlds and putting entire planets at risk. The Cosmic Security Organization recruits the dog to recover them, but its sterile rules and questionable personnel leave River stranded among a crew of troubled aliens. What follows is a lighthearted sci-fi adventure with an underlying sense of confinement, as every mission pulls the crew farther from the simple prospect of going home.

Missions play out as tactical, board-based puzzle encounters rather than direct action sequences. River recruits alien companions while travelling between assigned destinations, and each new teammate becomes a die with its own set of faces, powers, and possible actions. Rolling and placing those dice creates auras across the board, which must be arranged or accumulated in the correct patterns to clear each scenario. Limited dice and attempts make every move matter: players need to decide when to chase an immediate puzzle requirement, when to set up a stronger aura combination, and which unusual crewmates are worth adding to the team.

Its most appealing idea is the way character recruitment doubles as deckbuilding, except the “deck” is a growing collection of specialized dice.
