LEGO Batman: The Videogame

Gotham becomes a colorful brick-built playground when Arkham’s worst criminals escape and turn the city into their personal crime spree. LEGO Batman: The Videogame pairs the brooding iconography of Batman with silent-film-style slapstick, making every smashed object, absurd disguise, and oversized vehicle part of the joke. Batman and Robin lead the hero campaign through stories centered on Joker, Penguin, and Riddler, while separate villain chapters let players cause the trouble instead of cleaning it up. The result is a lighthearted action-adventure that still captures Gotham’s gadgets, shadows, and famous rogues gallery.

Most of the action takes place in compact, puzzle-filled levels where players break LEGO scenery for studs, fight gangs with simple melee combos, and assemble useful objects from scattered pieces. Batman’s suits grant tools such as gliding, demolition, and heat protection, while Robin’s outfits handle magnetic surfaces, hazardous areas, and other environmental obstacles, so swapping characters is essential. Between missions, the Batcave and Arkham Asylum function as hubs for revisiting completed stages, spending studs on unlockable characters and vehicles, and hunting collectibles. Local two-player co-op lets a second player drop in as the partner character, and its forgiving combat, frequent checkpoints, and no permanent failure penalty make it especially accessible.

The villain campaign is the standout feature, since it reuses Gotham’s foundations from a different perspective and gives characters like Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, and Two-Face their own destructive tools. Rather than chasing the broad open-city freedom of later LEGO Batman entries, this first game favors tightly designed levels packed with secrets, costume-based puzzles, and repeat-play incentives. Its wordless cutscenes and chunky visual humor still hold up, particularly for players who enjoy the older LEGO games’ more focused structure. Fans of LEGO Star Wars, Batman’s classic comic-book era, or couch co-op adventures will find an approachable, collectible-heavy romp, while completionists have plenty of locked doors and hidden studs to return for.
