The Cave (v1.0)

A talking, ancient cavern hosts a darkly comic puzzle adventure where seven deeply flawed strangers chase the one thing they desire most. Created by Ron Gilbert and Double Fine, The Cave mixes the character-driven absurdity of classic point-and-click adventures with side-scrolling exploration and platforming. Players choose three heroes—from a chivalric knight and a scientist to a time traveller, hillbilly, and creepy twins—then guide them beneath the earth through a bizarre network of themed chambers. The mood is playful but cruelly ironic, as each would-be hero’s personal quest exposes why they may not deserve a happy ending.

Progress revolves around navigating rooms, collecting objects, pulling switches, operating strange machinery, and figuring out how each member of the party can help solve environmental puzzles. Every chosen character carries a specific ability, such as teleportation or breath-holding, while their personal sections provide puzzles and story scenes unavailable to other heroes. There is no traditional combat to master; success depends on observation, experimentation, and switching between characters at the right moment. Up to three people can play locally, though solo players can freely swap among the entire team and direct idle companions through simple commands.

The Cave stands out through its sardonic narrator—the Cave itself—which comments on failures and moral compromises with dry amusement. Its cartoon-like 3D art, surreal locations, and wordless character animations give it the feel of a lost LucasArts-style adventure rebuilt for a modern controller. A single run only reveals the stories tied to the three selected characters, so seeing every personal route encourages repeat playthroughs, even if many shared puzzles remain familiar.
