Game Overview

A rain-soaked, plague-ridden metropolis becomes the hunting ground for Garrett, a professional thief who survives through patience, silence, and a talent for taking what powerful people hide. Thief (2014) trades heroic spectacle for tense first-person infiltration, sending players through mansions, brothels, factories, and decaying streets controlled by the authoritarian Baron and his Watch. The City feels oppressive and unstable, with a public uprising building beneath its cobblestones while a more personal mystery pulls Garrett deeper into danger. Its tone is dark, gothic, and deliberately grimy, closer to a supernatural Victorian crime story than a conventional action adventure.

Garrett’s main tools are shadows, sound, and careful observation. Missions reward slipping past guards, studying patrol patterns, picking locks, disarming traps, searching desks and safes, and escaping with valuables without ever raising an alarm, though a blackjack, bow, and specialized arrows offer options when stealth fails. A Focus ability highlights useful objects and environmental details, making the reboot more approachable than older stealth classics, while different difficulty settings can remove assists and demand stricter ghost-like play. The City acts as a hub between story missions, allowing detours into side jobs, collectible hunts, and optional break-ins that provide loot for equipment upgrades. Combat exists, but it is clumsy and dangerous by design; Garrett works best when he remains unseen.

What stands out is the game’s richly textured atmosphere and its emphasis on physical spaces that feel built to be robbed. Levels often provide multiple routes through windows, rooftops, vents, balconies, and locked doors, encouraging players to improvise rather than follow a single corridor. The story and technical polish are uneven, and veterans of the original Thief games may miss their deeper systemic freedom, but the central sneaking remains satisfying when a perfect heist comes together. Fans of Dishonored, Deus Ex, or stealth-heavy immersive sims who want a darker, slower-paced experience should find plenty to enjoy, especially on higher difficulties.

Right-click the game executable and select "Run as Administrator" to avoid save file issues and permission errors. This is especially important on the first launch.

How do I update my GPU drivers for this game?
