The mood is more ghost story than pure horror: unsettling and melancholy, but frequently beautiful.

Combat centers on Ethereal Weaving, a hand-gesture-based take on magical shooting that lets Akito fire wind, water, and flame attacks at the masked Visitors haunting the streets. Players weaken enemies, expose their cores, then tear them free in close-range finishing moves, while talismans, bows, stealth attacks, and spectral vision add tactical options. Open-world exploration revolves around cleansing corrupted shrine gates, rescuing trapped souls, hunting Yokai, collecting relics, and upgrading Akito’s elemental abilities and mobility tools. Vertical movement matters as much as street-level wandering, since rooftop paths, airborne Tengu grapples, and spirit-powered gliding turn Tokyo into a surprisingly navigable playground.

Ghostwire: Tokyo stands apart through its richly detailed modern-Japan setting and its willingness to build entire side activities around local myths, urban legends, and oddball spirits rather than standard open-world busywork alone. Its combat is approachable, though later encounters demand smarter elemental choices and movement, while the Spider’s Thread mode offers a repeatable roguelite challenge for players who want faster, more combat-focused runs. The Deluxe Edition adds cosmetic outfits and the Kunai weapon, small extras rather than essential content. Fans of Deathloop’s first-person powers, Control’s paranormal atmosphere, or Japanese folklore-heavy adventures find plenty to enjoy, especially if they value exploration and mood over relentless action.
