Autumn hangs heavily over a small Japanese town where a feared high-school delinquent is running out of time. The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa is an introspective side-scrolling action RPG about Ringo’s final months before graduation, spent drifting through school, street fights, late-night hangouts, and uncertain conversations with his closest friends. Its pixel-art presentation recalls 16-bit brawlers, but the mood is closer to a melancholy coming-of-age film than a power fantasy. Violence is part of Ringo’s life, yet the real subject is the uneasy feeling of youth ending before anyone knows what comes next.

Days follow a loose routine shaped by school hours, curfews, sleep, training, and the town’s day-night cycle. Ringo attends lessons to improve his grades, studies in the library, works out to build combat stats, earns cash through odd activities, and can spend free time on billiards, ping-pong, poker, or an in-universe arcade machine. Street confrontations use deliberate beat-’em-up combat built around punches, kicks, blocks, knockdowns, positioning, and stat growth, demanding more patience than a button-mashing arcade brawler. NPCs keep schedules, friends may be found in different places at different times, and much of the experience comes from choosing how—or whether—to fill each passing day.

What separates it from most gang-themed games is its refusal to turn the town into a checklist of territories to conquer. The world feels modest but lived-in, and its quiet pauses, awkward silences, and optional routines make Ringo’s isolation as meaningful as his fights. Players expecting constant action or a tightly directed RPG may find its pacing deliberately slow, while those willing to absorb its atmosphere will find a rare, personal story. It suits fans of River City Ransom-style brawling, Shenmue’s everyday detail, and character-driven indie dramas, especially players who value mood and reflection over clear-cut heroic goals.
